Le département horticulture de Disneyland Paris, c’est une diversité de métiers qui œuvrent dans l’ombre et participent au rayonnement de notre Destination. Paysagistes, arboristes, coordinateur(trice)s faune sauvage… il y en a pour toutes les spécialisations et différents postes sont actuellement ouverts au sein du département. Pour en savoir plus sur le quotidien de ces équipes et les opportunités disponibles, nous sommes allés à la rencontre de Johann POIS, Manager Horticulture.

Bonjour Johann, pourrais-tu nous en dire plus sur toi et ton rôle à Disneyland Paris ?

Bonjour, j’ai intégré Disneyland Paris il y a 28 ans en tant que jardinier. Par la suite, j’ai évolué au poste de technicien expert sur les hôtels et les zones thématiques avant d’occuper le poste de Team Leader (adjoint au Manager). Je suis aujourd’hui Manager Horticulture.

Comment est structuré le département horticulture, et votre travail au quotidien ?

Le département horticulture, c’est environ 110 Cast Members (collaborateurs de Disneyland Paris) dont 10 apprenti(e)s, réparti(e)s en 9 pôles : jardiniers(ères), arboristes, biocontrôle, irrigation, contrôle antiparasitaire, biodiversité, décoration florale, faune sauvage et bureau d’études construction.

La particularité du département horticulture, c’est de pouvoir travailler sur l’ensemble de la propriété, ce qui représente environ 450 hectares, dont 300 hectares d’espaces verts. Nous travaillons à la fois sur les parcs, les backstages mais aussi sur les hôtels. Par exemple, nos différentes équipes de jardiniers(ères) sont chacune en charge d’une partie du parc et d’un hôtel.

Leur journée commence tôt, aux alentours de 5h du matin, ce qui leur permet de travailler sur les jardins des parcs avant l’arrivée des visiteurs. Une fois les parcs ouverts, ils vont travailler sur les hôtels. Cette dynamique de travail permet aux équipes de s’adapter à nos visiteurs et donc de ne pas les déranger.

Notre quotidien, c’est de travailler sur une véritable scène de spectacle à ciel ouvert. Pour garantir cet effet spectaculaire auprès de nos visiteurs, nos équipes peuvent effectuer jusqu’à 7 rotations de nuit par an pour des évènements tels que l’arrivée de l’été, Halloween ou encore Noël.

Il y a une réelle diversité des métiers mais également des missions au sein du département, peux-tu nous en dire un peu plus ?

Nous comptons près de 10 métiers différents pour garantir la pérennité de notre matière première. Mais, au-delà de la multiplicité des métiers, notre travail est également très diversifié. Nous travaillons sur 16 thématiques différentes (5 zones dans le parc Disneyland, 4 zones dans le parc Walt Disney Studios et 7 hôtels), avec des contraintes de couleurs et de hauteur, tout en tenant compte de la nature vivante du végétal. Cela implique de savoir adapter sa façon de travailler, et ça rend notre quotidien très formateur, aussi bien pour nos technicien(ne)s que pour nos apprenti(e)s.

Qu’est-ce qui fait la différence au sein du département horticulture ?

Nous portons une attention particulière à l’écologie et au respect de l’environnement. Dans ce cadre, nous utilisons par exemple un système d’arrosage automatique économique en eau. Nous disposons de 6 000 km de réseau d’irrigation, dont 120 km d’arrosage goutte à goutte. Aussi, nous avons à cœur de n’utiliser aucun produit chimique et nous avons exclusivement recours à des méthodes naturelles.

Disneyland Paris’s Horticulture Department encompasses a wide range of professions that work behind the scenes and help promote our Destination. Landscape gardeners, arborists, wildlife coordinators… There’s something for every specialist and a number of openings are currently available in the department. To find out more about the day-to-day work of these teams and the opportunities available, we spoke to Horticulture Manager Johann Pois.

Hello Johann! Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Disneyland Paris?

Hi! I joined Disneyland Paris 28 years ago as a gardener. I then went on to work as an expert technician at the hotels and themed areas, before taking up the position of Team Leader (supporting the Manager). Today, I’m the resort’s Horticulture Manager.

How is the Horticulture Department structured and what does a typical day look like?

The Horticulture Department is made up of around 110 Cast Members (Disneyland Paris employees), including 10 apprentices, divided into 9 divisions: gardeners, arborists, biocontrol, irrigation, pest control, biodiversity, floral decoration, wildlife and the construction design office.

What’s different about working in the Horticulture Department is that we tend to the entire estate, which represents around 450 hectares, 300 of which are green spaces. We work in the parks and backstage areas, as well as at the hotels. For example, each of our different gardening teams is in charge of part of a park and a hotel.

They start early, at around 5 am, to ensure they can work on the park gardens before visitors arrive. Once the parks are open, they move on to work at the hotels. This dynamic organisation enables our teams to adapt to our visitors and avoid disturbing them.

Every day, we create a true, open-air stage that’s show-worthy! To guarantee that every visitor is treated to these spectacular effects, our teams can carry out up to 7 night rotations a year in the run-up to certain events, like the arrival of summer, Halloween or Christmas.

The department really does have a wide range of professions and responsibilities. Can you tell us a bit more about that?

Our department features almost 10 distinct professions to guarantee the longevity of the raw materials we use. But beyond this diversity of professions, our work is also very varied. We work on 16 different themed areas (5 zones in the Disneyland Park, 4 zones in the Walt Disney Studios Park and 7 hotels), all of which have colour and height constraints. We also have to take the living nature of plants into account. This means knowing how to adapt the way we work, and it makes our day-to-day missions particularly instructive, both for our technicians and our apprentices.

What makes the Horticulture Department stand out?

We are particularly attentive to ecology and respecting the environment. For example, we use an automatic watering system that uses less water. We have a 6,000 km irrigation network that includes 120 km of drip irrigation. In addition, we’re committed to banning the use of all chemical products in favour of natural methods only.
