Sunscreen is a non-negotiable—yes, even on cloudy days—and every dermatologist we spoke to agreed that the best sunscreen is the one you'll actually use. That's why we adore sunscreen sprays. If they're applied correctly, they offer the same protection as their lotion- or cream-based brethren, but the upside is that you don't have to spend as much time rubbing them in (although, to ensure you don't miss any areas, you should do a pass with your hands as well). The downside? Aerosols can be lost to the wind.

To make sure you're getting proper coverage, position the nozzle within six inches or less of your body, hold for four to five seconds, and coat your skin until it "glistens," Erum N. Ilyas, MD, board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology and CEO of AmberNoon, tells Oprah Daily. "Spray sunscreen should be applied like spray paint, not perfume," adds Joshua Zeichner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. "If you don’t see it, it's not there." And don't forget that you should reapply every two hours during summer months, and especially after sweating or swimming.

Sprays also work over makeup when you're looking to refresh your SPF, but only after you've already lathered on your broad-spectrum face sunscreen as the last step in your morning routine, says Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. "Facial mists can be used as an extra coating of sunscreen over your makeup without smudging or removing it," she adds.

What to look for in a spray sunscreen

Ready to select the product that's right for you? Start with the science: There are two different types of sunscreen—physical and chemical. "The chemical blockers work to prevent damage when the sun is absorbed into the skin. The physical blockers, like zinc and titanium, which are found in mineral sunscreens, block the sun from entering the skin and causing damage. Which to use is a personal choice," says Shari Sperling, DO, board-certified dermatologist and medical director and president of Sperling Dermatology in New Jersey. Whatever you choose, make sure it contains at least SPF 30 protection (no, 100 isn't necessary) along with the words broad-spectrum on the bottle, says Zeichner. "That means it will cover both UVA and UVB rays from the sun."

In short? Whether you're on the hunt for something that'll be kind to your sensitive or oily skin, or great options for dark skin tones that won't leave a cast, reach for any of these spray sunscreens all summer long.

All the dermatologists we spoke to raved about this lotion spray. "It’s super light and oil-free, so it won’t make your chest and back break out," says Evan Rieder, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at NYU Langone Health. Sperling adds, "It goes on elegantly, and it's great for those with sensitive skin."

This Neutrogena spray is another pick that was widely recommended by dermatologists. Rieder says the spray "goes on smoothly and doesn't leave a strong residue." Sperling notes that the non-comedogenic and oil-free formula isn't greasy and is safe for sensitive skin.

This ultra-lightweight zinc oxide formula can be used from head to toe without leaving the skin feeling heavy or greasy. It contains moisturizing vitamin E and vitamin C to protect against external aggressors.

"This slightly shiny product sits on top of your makeup without smudging or budging," says Shainhouse, who adds that "SuperGoop sunscreens have a great skin feel and luminous finish." Rieder loves that there's no residue and adds that it "offers a refreshing, light fragrance for people without sensitive skin." Pro tip: Store it in the fridge for a cooling effect, says New York City–based makeup artist Jordan Sawyer, who uses this product over makeup.

This fragrance-free mineral-based product is a solid choice for sensitive skin, says Ilyas. The natural formula contains zinc oxide, nourishing coconut oil, plus shea butter and cocoa butter, making it gentle enough for kids and toddlers.

Ilyas likes this water-resistant face mist because it works well over makeup as an extra layer of protection. Meena Singh, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, also recommends this pick, noting that it'll seamlessly "refresh your look" and complements darker skin tones, too.

Created with antioxidant-rich ingredients like grape, raspberry, and carrot seed oils, this vanilla-and-coconut-scented mineral spray gets another two (sunscreen coated) thumbs up from Ilyas. Though, like most mineral sunscreens, there may be a white residue, it does spread on evenly.

This hypoallergenic mineral sunscreen has Hirsch's seal of approval. Natural hydrating ingredients include aloe vera, sunflower seed oil, and jojoba. Sure, like its other zinc-based peers, it sprays on white, but at least you'll be covered.

Hirsch favors this setting spray, which leaves a pretty matte finish over makeup. Think of it like a soft IG filter but with SPF protection.

Great for sensitive skin, according to Hirsch, this sweat- and water-resistant mineral spray goes on easily. It also features an earth-friendly propellant.

Board-certified dermatologist Sheila Farhang, MD, recommends Black Girl Sunscreen because it makes products specifically with melanin in mind. This fragrance-free formula contains nourishing avocado and jojoba and dries quickly.
