From The School
Part of the experience of college is living, studying and breathing the same air as your classmates. You will likely make some of the best friends you will ever have, create a ton of memories and learn a lot about people in the process. At Point Loma, we understand that this is an important part of university life, and we do everything we can to help make it happen. Favorite Places We asked current students to tell us their favorite places to go in San Diego. Here are their answers: Miguel’s Cocina Petco Park Downtown San Diego The beach The park on Shelter Island Pat and Oscars Seaport Village Qualcomm Stadium Fashion Valley Mall In-N-Out Burger Balboa Park Santana’s The Gaslamp District La Jolla The Farmers Market The Living Room Horton Plaza Adalbertos Yogurt Mill Kobeys Swap Meet Coronado Little Italy Konos Hodad’s BurgersYou have a wide variety of skills, desires, experience, and passion-and PLNU has a wide variety of places to put all of that to use for the Kingdom of God. Maybe you are compelled to see the way that Gods people worship in another country... or to get to know families in need... or to play the bass in a worship band... or to lead your halls Bible study... or to visit those in prison. PLNU, a university dedicated to the practical call of Jesus to love God and love others, invites you to explore those interests here. We are committed to opening up as many doors as possible for you to serve. There are many opportunities for students to become involved in Clubs and Organizations at Point Loma. Most of these fall under the direction of ASB (Associated Student Body). PLNU and the ASB Board of Directors encourages you to participate in the wide range of opportunities that we provide. For more information, please visit www.pointloma.edu/campuslife CAMPUS LIFE FAQ Besides clubs and ministry groups, what else can I get involved in at the university? There is no shortage of opportunities for you to get involved outside the classroom. Here is just a sampling of some of the opportunities. Review the Student Handbook for more options. Outdoor Leadership and Recreation Mission Trips/LoveWorks Chapel Covenant and Discipleship Groups Worship Ministries Time-Out Team Barnabas Intramural Sports Peer Educator What are the lifestyle expectations for PLNU students? In signing a covenant with Point Loma Nazarene University as part of your application process, you agreed to follow institutional policies as outlined in the Student Handbook and in the university catalog. In turn, the university community is committed to helping you achieve your goals. PLNU is committed to fostering a healthy environment. As a part of that commitment, all members of the community are expected to abstain from all alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drug use on and off campus. Will I have access to the Internet? Students can research and communicate using the campus wireless network and from computer labs, library, or residence hall rooms. Each student is given a network and an e-mail account. Overview
From The School
Location
PLNU is located on the coast of San Diego--literally. We have beach access from our campus, but we are also very centrally located. PLNU’s campus is five minutes from the airport, ten minutes from downtown San Diego, thirty minutes from the border, an hour from Orange County and two hours from Los Angeles.
Campus Facilities & Equipment
Point Loma is constantly striving to better our campus facilities and equipment for our students. Our music and athletic training facilities are state of the art. Just within the past three years, PLNU has finished construction on new Student Financial Services building, new residence halls, the new Fermanian School of Business, and is nearing completion on the new School of Theology and Christian Ministry. Our sciences have recently benefitted from an NSF grant that allowed for the purchase of brand new lab equipment. Every area of PLNU is kept up to date to ensure easy informational access on campus
Off-Campus Opportunities
Students have many opportunities to take advantage of what is available off campus. Through PLNU-sponsored study-abroad programs and affiliations with other accredited programs, almost 11 percent of our current undergraduate population (compared to one percent nationally) and 30 percent of our recent graduates have studied abroad, traveling to countries such as Brazil, New Zealand, Italy, Egypt, Israel, France and South Africa. Students are also encourage to be a part of internships, whether your major is Business or Fashion Merchandising. In past internships, students have worked with the Birch Aquarium, NBC 7/39 San Diego, the San Diego Mayor’s Office, Naval Ocean System Center and the San Diego Padres. With more than sixty different majors and concentrations, students have a variety of options available to them at PLNU.
